๐ Cultural note
Honey-garlic chicken is the dish kids ask for by name โ sticky, glossy, sweet-savory. Restaurant versions can pack 40+g of sugar per serving. We use a small honey portion + lemon to keep the same bright flavor with a fraction of the carb hit.
Why this recipe is T1D-friendly
- Only 1 tbsp honey across 4 servings (~4g sugar per kid plate) โ restaurant glaze can have 8x that
- Lemon juice amplifies the sweet-tang perception so less honey tastes like more
- Bone-in or skin-on thighs add fat that further slows sugar absorption
- Cornstarch portion is tiny (1 tsp total) โ just enough to make it glossy, not gloopy
Ingredients
- 8 boneless skinless chicken thighs (about 1.75 lb) (0g)
- 1 tbsp avocado oil (0g)
- Salt + pepper (0g)
- Sauce:
- 1 tbsp honey (17g total / ~4g per serving)
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice (1g)
- 3 tbsp tamari or low-sodium soy sauce (2g)
- 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth (1g)
- 5 cloves garlic, minced (2g)
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated (0g)
- 1 tsp rice vinegar (0g)
- 1 tsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water (slurry) (3g total / ~0.75g per serving)
- 1 green onion, sliced (1g)
- 1 tsp sesame seeds (1g)
Directions
- Pat chicken thighs dry. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Sear thighs 4-5 min per side until golden and cooked through (165ยฐF internal). Remove to a plate.
- In the same pan (lower heat to medium), whisk together honey, lemon juice, tamari, broth, garlic, ginger, and rice vinegar. Simmer 2 min.
- Stir cornstarch slurry, drizzle into sauce, simmer 1 min until syrupy.
- Return chicken + any juices. Turn each thigh to coat in glaze, simmer 1-2 min.
- Slice or serve whole. Top with green onion and sesame seeds.
- Pair with a โ cup scoop of real jasmine + a steamed veg.
Dash's kid tips ๐
- "Sticky chicken" sells better than "honey-garlic" โ try renaming it at the table.
- Slice into strips for dipping-style eaters; leave whole for fork-and-knife big kids.
- Sauce-on-the-side option for kids who hate when "their food touches" โ Dash gets it.
