Why Packed Beats Cafeteria (Almost Every Time)
When my daughter was first diagnosed, the cafeteria menu became a math problem I couldn't solve from the parking lot. "Chicken tenders + sides" doesn't tell me whether the breading is 12g or 28g. The fruit cup might be in syrup. The roll is anyone's guess.
Packed lunch fixes that. You weigh once, count once, and the nurse doses with a number she can trust. It's not about restricting โ it's about predictability. Predictability is the gift you give your kid when you pack the box yourself.

1. Turkey & Cheese Roll-Ups + Cucumber Rounds
Carbs: ~3โ5g (no wrap) or ~15g (with one mini wrap)
Two slices of nitrate-free turkey, a slice of cheddar, rolled tight and toothpicked. Cucumber rounds with a tiny container of ranch on the side. Add a half mini wrap if your kid needs more staying power โ count the wrap. 2. Bento Box: Hard-Boiled Egg, Olives, Pepperoni, Strawberries

The bento format is a T1D parent's best friend โ every compartment is its own carb count. One egg, six olives, four pepperoni, half a cup of strawberries. Sticker the lid with the total. 3. Mini Quiche Cups (Make Ahead, Freeze)
Carbs: ~2g per cup

4. Chicken Salad Lettuce Cups + Apple Slices
Carbs: ~15g (from the apple)
Rotisserie chicken, mayo, a spoonful of diced celery, salt and pepper. Scoop into a butter lettuce leaf. Pair with half a small apple (~10โ12g) so the carb load is one clean number.
5. Pizza Roll-Ups (Low-Carb Tortilla)
Carbs: ~10โ14g (depends on tortilla brand)
Low-carb tortilla, two tablespoons of pizza sauce, mozzarella, a few pepperoni. Roll, slice into pinwheels, send cold. Kids think they're getting away with something.
6. Greek Yogurt Parfait (Plain + Berries)
Carbs: ~10โ15g
Half a cup of plain whole-milk Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of granola, a quarter cup of berries. The plain yogurt is the move โ flavored cups can hit 20g+. Read the label every time, because brands reformulate.
7. Cheese Cubes + Salami + Grapes
Carbs: ~12g (mostly from the grapes)
The classic charcuterie lunch. Twelve grapes is roughly 12g โ count them once and you'll eyeball it forever after.
8. Almond Butter on a Rice Cake + Banana Half
Carbs: ~22โ28g
This one's higher carb but it travels well and tastes like a treat. One rice cake (~7g), a tablespoon of almond butter (~3g), half a small banana (~12g). Great for kids who need more fuel before PE. 10. "Lunchable" Build-Your-Own (DIY)
Carbs: ~15โ20g
Six whole-grain crackers, four cheese cubes, four slices of deli turkey, a few grapes. Cheaper, cleaner, and your carb count is honest. Stick the total on the lid. Make It a System, Not a Daily Crisis
The hack that saved our mornings: prep five lunchboxes on Sunday. Same five combos, rotating. Boring? A little. But "boring" is the secret sauce of good T1D days. Predictable carbs in, predictable numbers out, no 7am math.
