The "What Do I Send?" Panic
The night before my daughter's first day back at school with T1D, I stood in front of the pantry for an hour. Literally an hour. I had the school nurse's phone number, a glucagon kit, two pump sites, and absolutely no idea what to put in the snack bag.
I knew she needed something for lows. I knew she needed a "free food" if she got hungry between classes. I knew she needed a protein after PE. But staring at the shelves, every option felt wrong โ too many carbs, not enough carbs, brand I hadn't read the label on yet, or just... not portable.
So I made a list. Then I taped it to the inside of the pantry door. That list โ refined a hundred times since โ is the printable I want to hand you today.

What's on the Printable
The checklist is one page, four columns, designed to live on your fridge or inside the snack bin. Every item has an estimated carb count so the school nurse can dose without a calculator.
Here's what each category looks like.
Column 1 โ Fast-Acting (for Lows)
These are the rescue snacks. Single-serving sized, fast carbs, no protein or fat to slow them down (because when she's low, "slow" is the enemy).

Pack at least two of these every single day. School bus delays, fire drills, missed buses โ the day will throw you one.

Column 2 โ Low-Carb Filler (Free Foods)
These are the "I'm hungry but it's not snack time" snacks. Under ~5g carbs in our family, no bolus needed per our care plan. Yours may differ โ ask your endo what threshold works for your kid.

These are the workhorses of our snack bag. They keep her steady, they don't require math, and they fit in a pocket.

How to Use the Checklist
Sunday Prep
Pull the printable. Walk the pantry. Check off what you have. Add what you don't to the grocery list. Pre-portion anything that comes in a big bag (popcorn, pretzels) into snack-sized containers with the carb count Sharpied on the lid. Monday Pack
Drop into the snack bag: 2 fast-acting, 2 low-carb, 1 protein, optional 1 treat. That's the formula. Five items. Done in 90 seconds.
Friday Audit
Empty the snack bag onto the counter. What came home untouched? Maybe it's not a winner. What ran out by Wednesday? Pack more of that.
The whole point is to make the snack bag boring โ predictable, fast, no thinking required. Boring snack bag = good T1D day.
Why This Matters for the 504 Plan
If your kid has a Section 504 plan (and if they don't yet, ask the school), the snack list is part of the conversation. Most plans include language like "student may access fast-acting carbohydrates at any time without permission." The printable lives in the nurse's office as a working reference โ what's in the bag this month, what the carb counts are, what the parents have approved.
A good 504 plan + a clear snack list = a school day where the adults around your kid know exactly what to do.
