Best CGM Overpatches for Kids (Tested by a T1D Mom)

Quick answer: The best CGM overpatches for active kids are Skin Grip (most durable, cute prints), ExpressionMed (best designs, kids actually want to wear them), and Pump Peelz for pod personalization. The trick to making any patch last 10 days isn't the patch โ€” it's Skin Tac wipes before application and Uni-Solve for removal. The wipes matter more than the brand.

Why You Need An Overpatch In The First Place

Dexcom and Libre both ship with an adhesive that, in theory, lasts the full 10 days. In practice, with a 7-year-old who does gymnastics on Tuesdays, swims on Thursdays, and wrestles the dog every afternoon? You're getting 4 days before the edges lift.

An overpatch is the fabric sticker that goes on top of the sensor adhesive to hold it down. It buys you the full 10 days. It's the difference between paying for a sensor you wore for 4 days vs the one you wore for 10. Insurance doesn't replace early-fail sensors easily โ€” overpatches are the cheap insurance.

Here's what's actually worked for us โ€” and what to skip.

The Top-Tier Overpatches

Skin Grip Dexcom G7 Patches (20-pack, Animal Prints)

The benchmark. Survived swim team, summer camp, and a 4-day beach trip without lifting. The kid-print versions (leopard, dinosaur, unicorn) turn the sensor into something my daughter wants to show off instead of hide under a sleeve. Hypoallergenic, latex-free, 10-day wear designed.

ExpressionMed Dexcom G7 Variety Tape Pack (25 ct)

If Skin Grip wins on durability, ExpressionMed wins on designs. Holographic, floral, rainbow, glow-in-the-dark โ€” they have everything. Sweatproof and fray-proof, holds through summer humidity. The variety pack is the smart move so your kid can pick the design each Sunday.

HECHUAN Libre 3 Patches Transparent (50-pack)

The budget play. If your kid is just starting out and you're spending $20+ on cute patches every two weeks, the transparent 50-pack stretches the budget. No-hole design protects the sensor on removal. We use these for the school week, save the cute ones for weekends.

Pump Personalization (Omnipod Crowd)

Pump Peelz Decorative Omnipod 5/Dash Stickers (10-pack)

Different from a CGM overpatch โ€” these go on the pod itself, not the adhesive. But the psychology is the same: when a kid can personalize the gear, they wear it longer and complain less. My daughter's Pod becomes "the unicorn pod" and suddenly site changes are a fashion event.

The Real Secret โ€” Prep & Removal

I'm going to say this loud for the parents in the back: the patch brand matters less than the prep.

Skin Tac Adhesive Barrier Wipes (50 ct)

This is the single product that took our sensor wear from "5 days if we're lucky" to "the full 10, every time." Wipe the application site, let it dry 30 seconds until tacky, then apply the sensor. The Skin Tac creates a barrier between skin oils and the adhesive. Game changer.

Smith & Nephew Skin Prep Protective Wipes (50 ct)

If your kid has eczema or sensitive skin, swap Skin Tac for Skin Prep. It protects the skin from adhesive irritation instead of just maximizing stick. The endo office handed us a sample on Day 1 and we've kept a box ever since.

Uni-Solve Adhesive Remover Wipes (50 ct)

The other half of the prep-and-remove ritual. After 10 days, the adhesive does NOT want to come off without help. Uni-Solve wipes dissolve it painlessly. This is the difference between a cooperative kid on site-change night and a 20-minute screaming negotiation.

Hospital-Grade Backup For Pool Season

3M Tegaderm Transparent Film 4"x4.75" (50 ct)

The summer pool insurance. Tegaderm is the hospital-grade transparent film that goes over the sensor + overpatch for absolute waterproof seal. Looks clinical (no cute prints) but it's the most reliable thing on the market for swim team kids.

Smith & Nephew IV3000 Transparent Dressing (100 ct)

The breathable alternative to Tegaderm โ€” also waterproof, but doesn't trap heat under the patch on hot days. Pediatric endo offices stock this one. 100 ct lasts a season.

The Site-Change Routine That Actually Works

  1. Choose the new site โ€” alternate sides, avoid scars/bruises. We rotate left arm โ†’ right arm โ†’ left abdomen โ†’ right abdomen.
  2. Clean with alcohol wipe, let it fully dry.
  3. Apply Skin Tac (or Skin Prep for sensitive skin). Wait 30 seconds until tacky.
  4. Insert the sensor. Press firmly for 30 seconds.
  5. Apply the overpatch (Skin Grip or ExpressionMed). Smooth edges down.
  6. For pool/beach days, add a Tegaderm layer over the whole thing.

The whole routine is six minutes once you've done it 20 times. The first three site changes will take forever and somebody will cry (probably you). It gets better.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you keep a Dexcom on for 10 days?

The combination that works in our house: Skin Tac barrier wipe before application, Skin Grip or ExpressionMed overpatch on top, and Tegaderm over the whole thing for pool days. Removing with Uni-Solve protects the next site from adhesive damage.

Are CGM overpatches safe for kids?

The major brands (Skin Grip, ExpressionMed, HECHUAN, Pump Peelz) market themselves as hypoallergenic and latex-free, and are widely used in T1D pediatric communities. If your child has known adhesive sensitivities or eczema, talk to your endo first and patch-test a small piece before committing to a full sensor wear.

What's the difference between an overpatch and a regular adhesive?

The CGM ships with its own adhesive built into the sensor backing. An overpatch is a separate fabric sticker that goes on top to reinforce the seal and prevent the edges from lifting during wear. It doesn't replace the original adhesive โ€” it backs it up.
