How we count carbs ๐ข
The short version: we do the first pass of the math so you don't start from zero โ and your care team always gets the final word.
Where the numbers come from
Every carb estimate on this site and in our books starts with USDA FoodData Central โ the U.S. Department of Agriculture's public nutrition database. For each ingredient, we look up the carbohydrate content for the amount the recipe actually uses, then add the ingredients up and divide by servings.
A worked example
Here's the math for our Crustless Pepperoni Pizza Bites (per serving):
- ~14 pepperoni mini slices โ โ1g
- Fresh mozzarella, a few small pieces โ โ1g
- 1 tsp marinara (optional dab) โ โ<1g
- Italian seasoning, a pinch โ โ0g
Total: โ2g carbs per serving. That "โ" is doing honest work โ it means estimate, every time you see it.
Why your numbers may differ (and that's normal)
- Brands vary. One brand's marinara can carry twice the carbs of another. When a specific brand matters, we name it โ always read your label.
- Portions vary. A "small dollop" at your house may be bigger than ours. Measuring is what keeps a carb count honest.
- Kids vary. The same 7g snack can land differently for different children, activity levels, and times of day.
What we will never do
- We never give dosing advice. Carb counts are inputs โ insulin decisions belong to your family and your care team, following your child's plan.
- We never make health claims. No recipe here treats, prevents, or manages any condition โ it's just real food with the first pass of math done.
- We never publish a number we didn't look up.
โ ๏ธ Everything on Brave Little Bites is educational only โ not medical
advice. All carb counts are USDA-based estimates that vary by brand and serving. Always read current
labels and confirm carbs and dosing with your child's endocrinologist, CDCES, or care team. Every
child with Type 1 diabetes is different.
